This session will review and analyze actual and potential MPL claims related to COVID-19 as well as the laws enacted providing immunity for these types of claims at the federal and state levels and challenges to those laws or executive orders. The session will explore actual and potential claims against nursing homes and hospitals and touch on claims against miscellaneous health care facilities and physicians.

Studies have shown that despite improvements in the overall health of the country, racial and ethnic minorities experience a lower quality of healthcare as they are less likely to receive routine medical care and face higher rates of morbidity and mortality. The pandemic has brought into focus the disparities in the nation’s economically vulnerable populations and the toll it is taking on minority community. In this session, Joe Zorola and Ronald Dunlap, M.D. will discuss disparities in health and healthcare, the challenges to address these disparities, and the effects on MPL insurance industry.

Healthcare Financial Lines Expanding and Emerging Exposures (CE/CLE Eligible)

Healthcare financial lines exposures were expanding before the pandemic but since Covid arrived on the scene, these exposures have not only become more acute but new exposures are emerging. Over the past several years, liability exposures have expanded due factors including industry consolidation, increased regulation, reduced reimbursement and reaction to issues like #metoo, and more reently, inclusion and diversity. Social Inflation has put additional pressure. This session will focus on how each of the financial lines exposures is expanding and where there are emerging exposures to watch. The presentation will provide an overview of current trends, risk reduction measures to be taken as well as underwriting and broking strategies that will improve the underwriting placement process.
